Inventory Kit Builder

The Inventory Kit Builder in Miva lets merchants create bundled products, called kits, made up of individual inventory-tracked items. Each component in the kit is its own product, complete with a unique SKU and inventory level codes, allowing for accurate stock tracking and fulfillment. Kits are ideal for grouping configurable or complementary items, such as different CPU types, memory options, or accessories in a customizable product.

If you're looking to offer product-specific options like clothing sizes or colors (where you're selling one item with selectable variants), use the Inventory Variants feature instead. Kits are designed for bundles of separate products, not variations of a single product.

Learn more about the Inventory Variants feature here.

For non-inventory options such as monogramming or gift boxing, a separate product entry is not necessary, because they do not need inventory tracking.

What Inventory Kit Builder Helps You Do:
  • Create bundled products, known as kits, from existing inventory-tracked items.

  • Link products in the kit to customer-selectable options to ensure accurate inventory tracking.

  • Managing Products and Inventory from Edit inventory screen for more efficiency.
  • Customize kit pricing by either setting it manually on the kit product or calculating it automatically from the total price of its parts.

In this guide, we’ll walk through an example of creating a computer bundle using the Inventory Kit Builder.

The base kit includes the following fixed components:

  • Mouse
  • Keyboard
  • Monitor
  • Tower Case

The customer can then select one of two CPU Product options:

  • CPU 6400
  • CPU 6800

STEP 1: Create Product Entries for the Kit and Components

The kit itself is a product. You will need to create individual products for each component included in the kit.

  1. Navigate to Catalog > Products
  2. Create a product that will represent your kit.
  3. If you haven’t already, create a separate product for each component you plan to include in the kit.

On any product page, the Inventory Kit Builder tab appears between the Attributes and Inventory Variants tabs.

STEP 2: Assign Attributes to the Kit Product

1. Click on the Attributes tab of the Kit Product you just created.

2. This is where you’ll define the options that customers can select, such as different sizes, colors, or in this example, CPU types.

3. Click on Add Attribute.

4. Enter your attribute details:
Code: cpu the internal identifier.
Prompt: CPU Options the label customers will see on the product page.

5. Check the box for Track Inventory. This enables inventory tracking for each option variant within the kit.

STEP 3: Add Options to the Attribute

1. In the Attributes tab, check the box next to the attribute you just created.
This will reveal the Add Option button (which replaces the Add Attribute button).

2. Click Add Option to begin entering the selectable values for this attribute.

3. For this example, enter two options: CPU_6400 and CPU_6800.
These options will later be linked to existing products, allowing Miva to track inventory for each selection.

Step 4: Configure Kit Parts in the Inventory Kit Builder Tab

Have your product codes ready in advance. This will make it quicker to enter all required components without switching between screens.

In the Inventory Kit Builder tab, you’ll see the options you created earlier, along with their associated attribute prompt.

1.Click on the first option (e.g., CPU_6400) to open the Edit Parts dialog box.

2. Enter the product code for one of the parts into the text field. (Example: mou1500 for the mouse.)

Be sure to include the product that corresponds to the selected option, in this case,CPU_6400.

3. Click Add Part to include it in the kit.

4. Set the quantity for each part using the field next to it. If a kit includes two of the same items (e.g., two mice), enter 2.

5. Repeat this for each Product for the Kit:

6. When finished, click Save.

Managing Inventory After Kit Configuration

Once you’ve configured at least one option in your kit, you’ll see the Edit Inventory button appear in the Inventory Kit Builder tab.

Clicking Edit Inventory opens a popup showing all the products associated with your kit.

From this screen you can edit the details of all the products in the Kit. You can manage everything from inventory and cost to product names and descriptions, without switching screens.

This centralized interface streamlines inventory and product management for your kit components.

Clicking a product name opens its full product page.

STEP 4: Generate Variants

Once all parts have been assigned to each option, click the Generate Variants button in the Inventory Kit Builder tab.

Note: Clicking this button does not create new products. Instead, it tells Miva to associate the kit product with the specific parts and quantities you’ve defined for each variant.

The Auto Generate Product Variants dialog box will appear prompting you to choose between two pricing methods:

Option 1: Variant Price is set by the Master Product and its Attributes.

  • The price of the kit is set by the kit product and the prices entered for the attributes.

  • The storefront will only display the price of the master product.

  • The customer won’t see the combined price with options until they view their basket.

Option 2: Variant Price is the sum of its Parts.

  • The prices of the master product and attributes are ignored.

  • Miva calculates the kit price by adding up the prices of all included parts.

Once you’ve selected your pricing method, click Generate. Your inventory kit is now fully configured is now available to be added as a product to the Storefront.
