What is OpenSSL? Why do I need it for the Miva Empresa Virtual Machine?
================================================

OpenSSL is a free package of the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TSL) protocols with full-strength cryptography. It is available for free download at www.openssl.org.*

OpenSSL generally comes in an un-compiled format. You would be responsible for compiling it on the server that you will be installing the files on. In some instances, you may be able to find the files pre-compiled online.

For a Windows NT/2000 server, the compiled libraries are libeay32.dll and ssleay32.dll.

For a UNIX/Linux server, the compiled libraries are libssl.so and libcrypto.so.

Miva Empresa Virtual Machine uses the OpenSSL libraries to communicate securely with other servers via the Secure MvCALL function in Miva Script v4. The use of this function makes it easier to communicate securely with remote servers, such as a payment gateway, easier since a Commerce Library is generally not needed.

In addition, most of the newer payment gateway modules built-in to Miva Merchant 4.14 and higher use OpenSSL instead of a Commerce Library. This means that, in order for them to work properly in a customer's store, OpenSSL must be installed on the server.

*Miva Merchant does not supply or provide support for the installation or compilation of the OpenSSL libraries on a server. However, we can provide support for getting the Miva Emrpesa Virtual Machine to recognize those files.
