Accepting credit cards online

There are 3 basic parts required in order to have an e-Commerce enabled site. They are:

Shopping Cart/Catalog - e.g.: Miva Merchant
Payment Gateway - Allows for the shopping cart to send payments to "Merchant Account."
Merchant Account - Business bank account that allows deposits from credit card purchases.

Generally, the only optional part of this is the Payment Gateway. You will always need some way to take payment (shopping cart) and a bank account in which to deposit the funds that you charge to the credit card.

Standard business checking accounts do not allow merchants to charge credit cards. Also, a merchant accounts for "brick and mortar" storefronts will not allow for online charges.

Because of the risk involved in online transactions, banks require a special merchant account for them.

Now, because each of these parts will cost something, oftentimes e-Merchants want to eliminate a part to save money.


An automated payment gateway provides many conveniences, but it will be up to you to weigh the advantages against the cost.

If you decide that you don't need a payment gateway, but you do have a online merchant account, Miva Merchant does have a tool that will allow you to capture credit cards and store them for manual processing later.  You are still required to be able to process credit cards in your retail store, through accounting software, or online through a virtual terminal.

It is called Credit Card Payment with Simple Validation. It validates that the credit card number is structured appropriately using a logarithm for credit card numbers, and then stores it in the administration.

Once you receive an order, you can then log into the Miva Merchant administration interface securely and process the orders using the terminal provided by your merchant account provider.

Credit Card Payment with Simple Validation will validate the following number structures:

American Express
Discover Card
MasterCard
Visa

To enable the module, follow these steps:

1. Log into your Miva Merchant administration interface.

2. Expand the "Stores" menu by clicking the blue triangle next to it.

3. Expand your store's menu by clicking the blue triangle next to your store's name.

4. Click the link: "Payment Configuration".

5. In the screen displayed, check the box next to " Credit Card Payment With Simple Validation ".

6. Click the "Update" button.

This will now enable the Simple Validation payment module for shoppers checking out on your online store.
