chown stands for Change Ownership.
to change the ownership and group of files and directories use the commands below

Change ownership of a directory and all sub files and directories

commandline> chown -R newowner:newgroup mivadata

Change ownership of a single file

commandline> chown newowner:newgroup diag5.mvc
