Using Coupons with Price Groups
Coupons can be a complementary strategy when leveraging Price Groups in your business. For instance, a 2-for-1 sale could be created as a Price Group, where the customer receives an item for free when they purchase one of the same item. The customer would receive the discount by inputting a coupon code during checkout. Here, the Price Group creates the discount, while the coupon provides a means for the customer to obtain that discount.
- Price Group Only: The customer receives the discount once they add the selected items to their basket.
- Price Group plus Coupon: The customer receives the discount when they input a coupon code during checkout.
Coupon Code Types
With Miva, two types of coupon codes can be created:
- Generated Coupon Codes: Miva generates a specific number of unique coupon codes based on your input. These codes give a common discount but each code is unique to each customer. You have control over the number of times the code can be used, and by the same customer.
- Single Coupon Codes: You create a single unique coupon code. It gives the same discount to all customers. The number of times one customer can use it can be set by yourself.
Note: The choice between unique or common coupon codes may not significantly impact how you track or distribute coupon use, unless you wish to sell coupons as gift certificates, in which case unique coupon codes may be preferable.
Create the Price Group
To create a Price Group, click the Marketing header and then the Price Groups tab. Then, click the Add Price Group button in the upper right corner. In the subsequent box, give your Price Group a Name. For coupons, set the Eligibility to Coupon Only. Lastly, select the type of Price Group you want to create.

Create the Coupon
To create the coupon, click the Marketing header and then the Coupons tab. Then click the Add Coupon button. Fill out the relevant fields in the box that opens.
- Code: Enter a chosen alphanumeric code. This code will be entered by customers to receive the discount.
- Description: Input a description if desired. If a discount of 25 PERCENT OFF is provided, when used, this description will appear in the customer’s basket.
- Eligibility: Select the group to apply the coupon to: Specific Shoppers, All Logged-in Customers or Specific Customers.
- Discount to Apply: Choose the Price Group to be used with this coupon. Optionally, one can skip this and assign the coupon to a price group later.
Note: More than one price group can be assigned to a coupon. Simply select your coupon in the coupons tab, and then click the Price Groups button. In the Batch List that opens, click the assigned slider next to the groups you want the coupon assigned to.
- Not Valid Before/After: Set a starting date and/or an expiry date.
- Max Use (Total): Determine the total number of times the coupon can be used.
- Max Use (Per Shopper): Determine the total number of times each customer can use a coupon code.
Click the Add button to finish.
Note: To let the system generate a coupon code for you, click the Generate button in the Coupons tab. Enter a “base” code which will be supplemented by a random alphanumeric for each customer. The rest of the setup follows as explained above.
Applying Multiple Discounts with a Coupon
Coupons provide the potential to apply two or more discounts with a coupon. This approach is particularly useful for offering customers a percentage off an item, or their basket total, as well as providing free shipping.
To do this, create your coupon as shown above, but select Assign Later in the Discount to Apply section. Then select the coupon in the coupons tab and in the batch list that opens, click the slider in the Assigned column next to the price groups you want to assign to the coupon.
