Coupons Overview
In Miva, it is necessary to associate coupons with a Price Group. The Price Group establishes the discount, while the coupon provides the customers with the means to access this discount.
An example would be a 2-for-1 sale Price Group. In this scenario, a customer buys an item and gets another identical item free. The coupon enables the customers to avail of the 2-for-1 sale by entering the coupon code during checkout.
- Price Group Only : Customers receive the discount as soon as they add the specified item(s) to their shopping cart.
- Price Group + Coupons : Customers receive the discount when they input a coupon code during checkout.
Miva admin allows for the creation of two types of coupon codes:
- Generated Coupon Codes : The system generates a specific number of unique coupon codes based on your instructions. You can specify how many times a coupon code can be used in total and by the same customer. Each customer receives the same discount with a unique coupon code.
- Single Coupon Codes : You create a single coupon code. Controls are in place for the number of times a coupon code can be used in total and by the same customer. Each customer receives the same discount with the same coupon code.
Note that the method of coupon distribution and tracking will determine whether there is a significant difference between generating unique coupon codes for a discount or giving all your customers the same coupon code. For instance, if you were selling coupons as gift certificates, unique coupon codes would be preferable.
