Facet Rules
Facet Rules give you control over how facets appear and behave globally and at the category level. By customizing priority, display type and visibility, you can help your customers find products more efficiently. Additionally, Multi-Value Custom Fields offer a flexible way to store and display multiple attributes in a single field, which can then be broken into individual facet options.
Working with Facet Rules
To access your store's facet rules, click Catalog>Facet Rules.
On the page that opens, the facets your store is using are listed. Clicking a facet opens the Facet Rules box.
Global Facet Settings
Within Facet Rules, each facet lists a series of settings:
Global Status (Show or Hide): Determines whether the facet appears on all pages that utilize facets (e.g., category pages, search pages, product listings).
Default Category Status (Show or Hide): Specifies if the facet should be displayed or hidden by default at the category level.
You can override this setting on a per-category basis (see Category Facet Rules below).
Facet Name: The name shown to shoppers on the front end (e.g., “Size,” “Brand,” or “Color”).
Facet Display Type: Defines how facet options are presented. The five possible display types are:
Radio Buttons (single-select)
Checkbox (multi-select)
Drop Down List (single-select)
Nested (for categories only)
Range Slider (for price or numeric fields)
Priority: Sets the order in which facets appear on the page. A higher number indicates a higher placement (i.e., closer to the top of the facet list).
Facet Display Types
Radio Buttons (Single Select)
Allows the user to select only one option at a time.
Example use: “Size” (one selected size per query).
Checkbox (Multi-Select)
Enables the user to choose multiple options concurrently (e.g., “Red” and “Blue” under “Color”).
The result set includes products matching any of the selected options.
Drop Down List (Single Select)
Presents options in a single-select dropdown menu (similar to radio buttons but in a more compact format).
Nested (Category Only)
Used exclusively for category-based facets. When selected, it shows categories and subcategories in a hierarchical view that expands as the user drills down.
Range Slider (Price Only)
Typically used for price filtering or other numeric-based filters. Shoppers can move a slider to define a min/max range.
Category Facet Rules
Each category in Miva has its own facet rule overrides. This capability is valuable if you need different facets or facet ordering in specific categories. For example:
Clothing Category: Brand might be your most important facet, so you set it to appear first (highest priority).
Accessories Category: Price might be the most important, so you place it first in that category’s settings.
How to Override Category Facet Rules
Choose the Category you wish to work with. Go to Catalog>Categories and then choose the Category from the batch list.
On the Category page, click the Facet Rules tab. Select the Facet you want to override.
In the box that opens, adjust the Handling value to your desired setting in the drop down.
When finished, click Update.
Any changes made here affect only the specific category you are editing. You can always revert category-level customizations to the default global settings with the Revert button.
